Home Economics Lower Secondary Subject Guidelines (Draft)

In 2010 QCAA developed the draft Home Economics Lower Secondary Subject Guidelines (LSSG) to provide advice about constructing Home Economics courses of study for Years 8–10. The guidelines draw on the Essential Learnings for Health and Physical Education (HPE) and Technology, as well as the Year 10 Guidelines for the Health and Physical Education and Technology learning areas.

The Home Economics Lower Secondary Subject Guidelines provide:

  • examples of how the Essential Learnings and Year 10 Guidelines can be interpreted in a home economics context
  • assessment advice
  • two examples of how the Essential Learnings and Year 10 Guidelines can be used to plan and develop units of study that target Years 8–10 students.

These guidelines have replaced the 2005 Home Economics Education Subject Area Syllabus and Guidelines, which were based on core learning outcomes. Following the release of the 2010 guidelines, the 2005 guidelines have remained on the QSA website in the section called ‘Past syllabuses’ as they contain useful reference material.

Essential Learnings

The Essential Learnings, developed as a component of the QCAA’s Queensland Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Framework, underpin the Home Economics Lower Secondary Subject Guidelines and Queensland home economics curriculum programs and units of work in Years 1–9.

The Essential Learnings describe the knowledge, understanding and ways of working that students need for ongoing learning, social and personal competence, and participation in a democratic society. They identify what teachers should teach and what students should have opportunities to know, understand and be able to do, and have been developed for the eight key learning areas:

  • English
  • Health and Physical Education (HPE)
  • Languages Other Than English (LOTE)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE)
  • Technology
  • The Arts

The key learning areas that are most relevant to home economics are Health and Physical Education and Technology.

The Health and Physical Education EssentiaLearnings are organised as follows:

  •  Health
  •  Physical activity
  •  Personal development

The Technology Essential Learnings are organised as follows:

  •  Technology as human endeavour
  •  Information, materials, systems (Resources)

Home economics teachers typically plan their curriculum using the Health and Personal development
organisers of HPE and both of the Technology organisers. Some units are planned using only one learning area, and others integrating the areas.

When planning using the Essential Learnings, teachers should also refer to the policies of their specific school authority and of their school.
