Who we are
HEIA(Q) is a division of the national peak professional association for home economics professionals in Australia—the Home Economics Institute of Australia Inc. (HEIA). There are seven other divisions: one in each state and territory. Members include professionals from a range of settings. However, in Queensland, the majority of members are, have been, or will be professionals involved in formal school-based home economics education. These include:
- practising and retired teachers
- curriculum officers
- tertiary lecturers and students.
This core of home economics educators is complemented by a small but important group of home economics professionals who work in community-based organisations in areas such as public health, nutrition and consumer affairs.
The Queensland division supports:
- the mission of the Home Economics Institute of Australia Inc.—to enhance the professionalism and political legitimation of Australian home economics professionals
- the mission of the profession in Australia—to educate, inform, and to act as an advocate to government, industry and the community for families and households, so that individuals can make informed choices in order to enhance their everyday living.
In supporting these missions, the Queensland division provides leadership in and advocacy for, in particular, effective education related to the wellbeing of individuals and families in their everyday living.
